Fun Only When Bad
“It’s no fun doing a review of a good movie because you can’t say anything bad about it. The only time it is fun to review something is when it’s bad.” The Wave pg. 75
My reaction to this quote is that if there is something that is not fun, you will not want to do it. When something is interesting, it is mostly because it is bad, people get drawn into something that is bad, rather than if it was good. Say if someone on the news did something good, people would not talk about it as much, because they might think like they just did something good, and it will not affect us. But if someone saw something bad they would be more interested in it because it could be able to affect us, and would want to go and get more information on it, so that they could go further, and know more about it.
When people hear about bad things on the news they want to know more about it, like it draws their attention. If someone heard about the bombing in Boston, they would get drawn into it, because it was bad, but if they saw something like a firefighter saving a little kid they would not pay that much attention. If someone had to do a report on the Plant Fertilizer exploding in Texas, or a cop catching a robber, they would want to do the report on the Plant Fertilizer, rather than the cop catching a robber, because the Plant Fertilizer would be much worse than the cop catching the robber. Why do you think that people pay more attention to the bad news over the good news?
I agree with you that people get drawn into news that is about bad things more than about what good things people do. I also think the way news is reported dramatizes bad things more to make the viewers watch more. I get tired of always watching what's bad in the world and not seeing enough of what good things people have done.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think that they like more of the bad news instead of the good news.
DeleteWe do hear a lot about random acts of violence, but how often do we hear of random acts of kindness? Do you think if positive stories were more widely reported it would inspire others to do the same? Is fear still a better motivator than leading by example? Perhaps you should pay it forward and try one random act of kindness per day and see if it catches on.
ReplyDeleteWe barely hear about random acts of kindness. I don't think that if positive stories were more widely reported we would not be inspired to do the same, because we might just still do what we normally do. I think that fear is a good example because it is the easiest to explain.
