Helpers and Rescuers Are Heroes

Think about the terms “help” and rescue.”  What is the difference between these two terms?  In the context of the Holocaust, how do you understand the difference between these two terms?  Can you think of a specific time when help was needed rather than rescue, and of times when Jews needed to be rescued?  Would you characterize those individuals who helped Jews as heroes?  Why or why not? (Echoes and Reflections)

Help and rescue are different because help is helping them survive or giving them something that will help live. Rescue means to save them so that they wouldn’t have to face anything bad. In the movie Fateless the Jews were all in the train begging for water if the Hungarian officer did, he would be helping them not rescuing. A person who did rescue people was Raoul Wallenberg he had diplomatic passports he handed them out official-looking diplomatic papers to thousands of Jews. He supplied drivers’ license and forged documents for Jews without identity papers. An example of help is in the movie The Pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman was hiding and one of the Nazis would supply him with food to eat. I think that there were times where they needed more help and sometimes more of rescue. Because they didn’t have much to eat or drink, so they would need help on getting food and something to drink like when they were on the train. Rescue was needed when they were close to dying like when they were in extermination camps. Individuals who helped Jews are heroes because they helped them survive - if they didn’t they could've died much more faster.
